Our 10 Questions for this IT Wondrous Woman.

Fun Facts

1. What’s the one thing about you that your business colleagues don’t know about you?
That I can read Tarot! I was fascinated by the history of tarot and wanted to understand more about the cards, so I decided to study last year. I haven’t put it into practice yet!

2. Before the pandemic, how many air miles/KMs did you flying annually?
I’m not sure. I managed to get to Gold on British Airways despite never getting an upgrade, although I’ve made good use of their lounge!

3. What is the most adventurous food you have eaten and what city/location did you eat it?
Probably not one for the vegetarians, and maybe in Singapore. I wouldn’t eat anything like that now, I’m a new-born Flexitarian!

Your Career

4. What are the top two experiences, achievements or failures that shaped your journey as a successful leader?

  • I think the realization is that your career is not linear is incredibly important. My role has been redundant twice, I’ve had many promotions but also many sideways moves which have led to bigger and better things. What’s really important is deciding whether it’s the promotion you want, or working on your skills in a company that aligns with your values.

  • I’ve had many failures. However, what I’ve learnt is that in order to succeed you need to take some risks and chances and be able to “fail fast.” Sometimes, you will uncover some amazing innovative successes in a sea of minor failures.

5. Did you have a mentor in the early part of your career and, if so, what is the biggest lesson you learned from your mentor or influencer?
I’m lucky to have worked with many great leaders, but one person who has trusted me and helped accelerate my career is Emma Roffey, VP Marketing at Cisco. Emma has given me the confidence to “just try it,” step into the unknown and be comfortable with being uncomfortable. My favorite expression that she encouraged me to say when in a stressful situation is “Keep your powder dry!”

Walking In Your Shoes

6. What is one piece of business or career advice you would give to your younger self?
Don’t listen to those gremlins in your head, telling you that you can’t do it: “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”

7. As a leader, how do you remain a resource for people early in their careers?
I’m passionate about coaching and mentoring, and have worked for many years for The Girls Network, supporting girls who need inspiration and support.

Today’s Business Environment

8. What is the most interesting project you have worked on in the last few years?
What I’m really excited about is a new campaign on TikTok where we are launching our acquisition of Mailchimp. This will help small business owners get career advice from BBC Apprentice stars and influencers, plus the opportunity to win tickets to Wimbledon!

9. What skills are you currently developing or refining (in yourself) that will make you a more successful leader in the digital economy?
You can never know enough about ML, AI, Web 3.0, data and analytics. I try to invest time into being curious about these areas while learning from others.

10. What is your greatest business challenge today?
Ones that will be probably familiar to others are team retention, competitive differentiation and operational effectiveness – the market is so dynamic and fast-paced. How you retain staff and attract customers is a constant focus.
